June: The Foundation Month
This is your setup month. Even if you’re eager to start immediately, investing 4 weeks in preparation significantly improves your odds.
- Start a prenatal vitamin. Folate needs 4–12 weeks to reach protective neural tube levels. Start today. FullWell Prenatal →
- Book a preconception checkup. Bloodwork (TSH, vitamin D, ferritin), medication review, vaccine status.
- Begin tracking your cycle. Download Premom or Fertility Friend. Start using OPK strips to identify your fertile window.
- For him: Start CoQ10 (200mg daily) and zinc (30mg). Get a semen analysis baseline if over 35. CoQ10 on Amazon →
- Environmental cleanup: Switch to glass food storage, mineral sunscreen, filtered water.
July: Active Trying
You know your cycle pattern from June’s tracking. Now optimize timing.
- The fertile window: Have intercourse every 1–2 days during the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. That’s 3–4 well-timed sessions per cycle.
- Don’t overthink position. No position is proven better than another. Lying flat for 10–15 minutes afterward may help marginally but isn’t required.
- Use fertility-friendly lubricant if needed. Regular lubricants can impair sperm motility. See FertileStart’s lubricant guide.
- Summer advantage: The 2026 Lassen study shows sperm quality peaks in June–July. You’re timing it right.
August: Sustain and Adjust
If July didn’t result in a positive test, that’s completely normal. Remember: 20–25% chance per cycle even with perfect timing.
- Review your tracking data. Is your OPK pattern clear? Are you catching the LH surge? If not, consider adding BBT tracking. See FertileStart’s BBT thermometer guide.
- Dial in nutrition. Summer produce is at its peak. Load up on berries (antioxidants), leafy greens (folate), and fatty fish (omega-3). See LifeFertile’s summer diet guide.
- Manage the TWW. The two-week wait is the hardest part. Distraction, journaling, and boundaries all help. See our TWW Survival Guide.
September–October: Evaluate
After 3–4 cycles, you have meaningful data.
- Under 35, no risk factors: Keep trying. The standard is 12 months before testing. But if your gut says something is off, trust it.
- 35+: If 3–4 cycles haven’t worked, consider scheduling a fertility evaluation. See FertileStart’s first appointment guide.
- Known risk factors (PCOS, endometriosis, irregular cycles): Don’t wait. Book with an RE now. See ConceiveGuide’s insurance coverage guide.
