Does Female Orgasm Help You Get Pregnant? What the Research Shows

The science behind the upsuck hypothesis: does female orgasm help conception by drawing sperm into the uterus? What studies have found, and why relaxed sex matters regardless.

💡 Bottom Line Up Front

The evidence is mixed. The “upsuck hypothesis” suggests that female orgasm creates uterine contractions that draw semen through the cervix. Some studies support this; others don't. No study has demonstrated that orgasm increases pregnancy rates. What IS clear: relaxed, enjoyable sex reduces cortisol and other stress hormones that can impair reproductive function. Whether orgasm helps mechanically, it definitely helps hormonally and psychologically.

The Upsuck Hypothesis

In 1993, researchers Baker and Bellis proposed that female orgasm creates rhythmic uterine contractions that generate a “suction” effect, drawing semen from the vagina through the cervix and into the uterus. They called this the “upsuck” mechanism. Their study suggested that orgasm occurring between 1 minute before and 45 minutes after male ejaculation resulted in greater sperm retention.

🔬 The hormonal angle

Regardless of the mechanical question, orgasm triggers a cascade of hormones that may support conception indirectly. Oxytocin promotes bonding and reduces stress. Prolactin promotes relaxation. Endorphins reduce cortisol. Since chronic stress is associated with reduced fertility (through impacts on ovulation, uterine receptivity, and sperm quality), anything that reduces stress — including enjoyable sex and orgasm — may help. Not because of uterine suction, but because of the hormonal environment it creates.

What This Means for You

Don't stress about orgasm as a fertility tool. If it happens, great — it might help a little and it definitely doesn't hurt. If it doesn't happen, your conception chances are not meaningfully reduced. The sperm that matter are entering the cervical mucus within seconds of ejaculation, long before any upsuck mechanism could act.

What's more important is that sex remains enjoyable, which sustains the frequency needed during the fertile window over what may be many months of trying.
